Painted brick is one of the most popular updates for older ranch homes. It can turn a dated orange-red house into something that looks brand new. But painting brick is a bigger decision than painting siding, so here's what to know first.

BeforeAfterIt's very hard to undo
Once brick is painted, getting back to bare brick is difficult and expensive. It usually takes chemical strippers or careful blasting, and it rarely looks perfect afterwards. So be sure you love the new look before you start.
Your three options
| Option | Look | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Masonry paint | Solid, even color | The cleanest, most modern look. Will need repainting over the years like any exterior paint. |
| Limewash | Soft, chalky, old-world | Lets some brick show through and wears away gradually over time, which many people like. |
| Leave it | Natural brick | Sometimes just painting the trim, shutters and door makes brick look new again. |
Moisture is the big issue
Brick and mortar naturally take in and release moisture. If the wrong paint traps that moisture, it can cause peeling and damage. That's why brick should be painted with primer and paint made for masonry, and breathable products are often the safest choice.
Before painting, look for warning signs:
- White, powdery deposits (called efflorescence) mean water is moving through the brick. Find and fix the cause first.
- Crumbling or missing mortar should be repaired (repointed) before any paint goes on.
- Mildew or dirt must be washed off, and the brick must be completely dry before painting.
How a brick paint job is done
- Inspect and repair cracks and loose mortar.
- Clean the brick and let it dry fully, which can take a few days after washing.
- Protect windows, doors, plants and walkways.
- Prime with a masonry primer.
- Paint in two coats, working the paint into the rough texture and mortar joints.
- Finish the trim, shutters and door for the full new look.
Good prep is what makes painted brick last. Skipping it is why some painted brick peels within a few years.
Colors that work on brick
- Soft warm whites (pure bright white can look stark on textured brick)
- Greige and light gray
- Deep charcoal or black for a bold, modern look
- Pair any of them with black or dark bronze trim and a statement front door
